Here are some more races. That day was pretty nice; I got to play on a bunch of late-game courses. There is a reason why you see the first few courses far more frequently though: The last 16 courses are locked when you begin the game. In order to make them usable in any mode except Grand Prix, you must purchase them using the SEGA Miles you obtain doing races. (That’s what the numbers at the end of each race are for–you can use them to unlock songs, courses, and characters.) It’s kind of a weird move, and I presume its something you’d find in a more traditional racing game. Either that, or someone at Sumo Digital was unhappy at how Mario Kart’s courses are either all unlocked from the start or are unlockable almost immediately, and wanted people to work for them. Unfortunately, this is another case of not making things obvious: A lot of people wind up wondering why they can only play the first 8 courses. The races you see here are not among those 8, so we got hosts who understood the way the game works. I would like any potential sequel for this game to have a better interface though, even if Sumo decides to keep the “purchase SEGA Miles for access to advanced courses” schtick. This video consists of the latter two races of the Chao Cup, as well as the awards ceremony that every kart racer needs to have. I chose Sonic for this set of Grand Prix races because he’s the most fitting character to start showing these videos with. He is NOT the easiest character to learn, however, as he veers more as a high-speed, bad-handling character. He’s been this way in every Sonic racing game that’s ever been made, an interesting (but logical) subversion of the main character being the most balanced. Now, many of you have been asking: Why is Sonic in a car? Why is he not running on foot? Well, I have an explanation for that: There are rules for the race that Sonic has to follow, and I’ll bet one of them is that every racer needs a vehicle to race in. He’d be disqualified if he were on foot. it would be as if someone brought a car to a bicycle race. Besides, Sonic’s used to being in a car. He’s quite comfortable with it. He’s done so in Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2, and Sonic R. The Sonic Riders games are the only ones where he isn’t in a car. (NOTE: Many viewers have informed me that Sonic is on foot in Sonic R. They are correct. I somehow thought everybody was in a car.) Race #3 Casino Park Roulette Road Song: BINGO Highway This is a pretty long course, and one where gravity doesn’t always point downwards, allowing the designers to put in some interesting landscapes along the way.
